Project
Worker at St. Bede’s House (a supported housing scheme)
I started work at St Bede’s House as a Relief Worker in December
2002. I soon realised that the success of the project was the result
of a lot of team effort, effective communication and a working understanding
of the tenant group.
The client groups we mostly work with in St Bede’s are young adults
who are either homeless or under the stress of homelessness. The project
assists the residents to facilitate long term independent living by
helping them to find pathways into education, employment, training and
mainstream housing support.
The job is challenging but the gradual job introduction from a Relief
Worker to a Project Worker role has equipped me with skills which can
only be obtained from a hands-on working approach. I have found the
job interesting as it involves a variety of tasks. These include facilitating
tenant participation, helping residents access social entitlements,
dealing with conflict resolution and tenants’ personal problems
and liasing with external agencies.
The work of a Project Worker allows me to work closely with residents
on my patch of five flats. The rationale is to enabling each patch worker
to identify potential problem areas such as rent and void controls.
The job gives me the personal satisfaction of working with an efficient
staff team who are always there to help advance my understanding and
insight into problems facing young adults. I have learnt new coping
strategies and seen the process of negotiation from a different perspective.
I feel my job is instrumental in assisting and supporting young adults
to adopt a proactive approach to personal and social responsibility
which then encourages a more mature outlook to problem solving.
